They describe fragrance concentration. EDP (Eau de Parfum) is the standard strength for most of our perfumes; Extrait de Parfum is a richer, more concentrated form.

Understanding Fragrance Concentration

A fragrance's strength depends on how much perfume oil is dissolved in its base, usually alcohol. More oil generally means a richer scent that lasts longer and stays closer to the skin as it develops.

Extrait de Parfum (Parfum): 20–40% perfume oil. The most concentrated form. Dense and intimate, it lasts 8 hours or more and unfolds slowly. A little is enough.

Eau de Parfum (EDP): 15–20%. The standard for most niche perfumery. It has a full presence and lasts 6–8 hours, balancing projection and longevity.

Eau de Toilette (EDT): 5–15%. Lighter and brighter, with more emphasis on top notes. It lasts 3–5 hours.

Eau de Cologne (EDC): 2–5%. Fresh and fleeting, it lasts about 2 hours. It's meant to be splashed on and reapplied.

Perfume Oil / Attar: Concentrated oil with no alcohol. It wears close to the skin, warms with the body, and often lasts a long time.

A note on strength: There is no legal standard for these categories. Each house sets its own formula, so one maker's Eau de Parfum can outlast another's Extrait. Your skin, the climate, and the materials themselves also matter. Heavy resins, woods, and musks tend to linger, while citrus fades quickly. Concentration tells you the density, not the whole story.
